Blue Ink Guide
Fourth in a series!
from the fountain pen of Michael Richter

Blue Ink

Aurora Blue: Very intense darker blue with a very visible touch of violet; dries slowly. (bottled ink and cartridge)

Jansen Indigoblau (Indigo Blue): Unique very dark (darker than Aurora) blue with a violet touch. (bottled ink only) Darkest representative of blue inks. Does not flow freely in all pens because of its color intensity.

Parker Penman Sapphire: I think I speak for most fountain pen enthusiasts, that this ink is (bottled ink and cartridge) "THE" blue ink used as a reference. Outstanding very intense darker blue with no purple tones at all. Unique color but like all Penman inks dries up quickly in a pen not used frequently. Entire Penman line of inks is discontinued.

Omas Roma 2000 Blue: Maybe the only/closest alternative ink to Parker Penman. Intense blue but (bottled ink only) just a tiny bit more purple (compared to the Sapphire) and slightly lighter. Produced in limited quantities (now discontinued) in the year 2000 to accompany Omas' limited edition pen with the same name which is also discontinued. There are indications that Omas may change their regular blue formula to that of Roma 2000.

Private Reserve Lake Placid: Intense blue right in the middle between Omas 2000 Blue (Lake Placid is (bottled ink only) slightly brighter) and Waterman Blue.

Waterman (Florida-) Blue: Pretty good blue color but does not reach the intensity of the Penman Sapphire (bottled ink and cartridge) or Omas 2000. Slightly more violet than Omas, but still not as much as in the "ordinary/usual" Royal Blues. Good flow in most pens.

Lamy Königsblau (Royal Blue): Similar in terms of color to Waterman Blue with just a bit less purple and (bottled ink and cartridge) slightly lighter (may appear more washed out on a pen with a "drier" ink flow") Good flow.

Jansen Blue: Typical purple hued Royal Blue with OK intensity. (bottled ink only)

Montblanc Königsblau (Royal Blue): Good medium blue with just a little bit less purple than most Royal (bottled ink and cartridge) Blues. Good intensity in pens with a wet flow, otherwise a little bit washed out. Flows well in most pens.

Herlitz Königsblau (Royal Blue): Ordinary purple hued Royal Blue with a washed out look. (bottled ink and cartridge)

Parker Quink Washable (Royal-) Blue: Medium (lighter than e.g. Lamy or Waterman) Blue, so may look (bottled ink and cartridge) washed out with lower intensity. In terms of color (not intensity or darkness !!!) similar to Waterman Blue. Good Flow.

Parker Quink Permanent Blue: Similar to the washable Blue but just a touch darker and with a (bottled ink and cartridge) almost invisible blue-black hue (only visible when compared directly). In my opinion a nicer color than the washable one. Good Flow.

Sheaffer Blue: Medium Blue similar to Parker Quink washable blue in terms of intensity with (bottled ink and cartridge) just a touch less purple in it (may be in-between the washable and permanent Parker blue in terms of color) and might appear washed out with some pens (like most Sheaffer colors do!). Good Flow.

Pelikan Cyanblau (Cyan Blue): Very unique medium blue with no purple in it at all. The color actually goes (cartridge only) towards a real cyan blue (which is more a "turquoise" color) but is still a true blue. Maybe looks like really "watery" Penman sapphire (also having very slight turquoise hues when watered down). Very nice color for every day use (and also hard to describe) but also discontinued a couple of year ago (like the Pelikan Cherry Red and Silver Grey).

Private Reserve Naples Blue: Another unique blue which tends towards the turquoise/cyan blue (more than (bottled ink only) Pelikan cyan blue). Color is more blue than e.g. Waterman South Sea Blue which is s turquoise-blue color. Nice color and good intensity.

Blue Black Ink

Waterman Blue Black: Dark blue-black color with good intensity and grey hue. Does not get (bottled ink and cartridge) darker when dried like Pelikan or Montblanc blue black. Good flow.

Parker Quink Blue Black: Very similar to Waterman blue black in all aspects but may be a little bit (bottled ink and cartridge) more grey.

Sheaffer Blue Black: Similar to Parker and Waterman but darker (more grey/black) with good (bottled ink and cartridge) intensity. Good flow. (see also grey inks)

Herbin Bleu Nuit: Light medium blue grey color, similar to Parker blue black in terms of color (cartridge only) but less intense. Washed out look.

I have not tried following blues:

Abraxas: Königsblau/Royal Blue, Orionblau /Orion Blue (less purple then Royal Blue), Saturnblau/Staurn Blue(medium blue with just a touch of turquoise), Wasser/Water (medium turquoise blue), Nachtblau/Night Blue (dark intense blue with purple hues)
