Green and Turquoise Ink Guide
Second in a series!
from the fountain pen of Michael Richter

Green Fountain Pen Inks:

This time I tried to come up with an ink-color chart for green inks. With such a big variety of different shades I've found it pretty hard to find verbal descriptions for everyone to imagine the true color.

If you mix equal parts of the two primary colors yellow and cyan ("-blue"), you should get what I would consider a medium green which does not tend towards the yellow not towards the blue ("cyan").

I'll call the color in between this medium green and cyan a turquoise green .

Adding more yellow to the green will give you a yellow green or some sort of lime or grass green.

The fourth kind of green would be the olive green , which can be created by mixing
the third primary color magenta (a reddish pink) to the yellow green, adding a brownish hue.

These four "primary" shades of green can mainly be varied in lightness/darkness and intensity.

Medium to Dark Green:

Parker Quink Permanent Green: This is THE true medium green to me and is less blue than (bottled ink and cartridge) Sheaffer Emerald Green. The color is slightly washed out and pretty light in terms of intensity, but the only kind of this shade of green I know.

Sheaffer Emerald Green: The Sheaffer Green is a true "Emerald" green, slightly (bottled ink and cartridge) faded, similar to Parker Quink Green but has just a touch more blue.

Lamy Grün (Green): Medium green similar to Sheaffer Green but slightly darker and (bottled ink and cartridge) more blue and does not have the washed out look

Pelikan Brilliant Grün (Green): Not much of a difference to the Lamy green.(bottled ink and cartridge)

Herbin Lierre Sauvage (Ivy Green): A medium "Bottle-Green" which is more yellowish than (cartridge) Jansen green

Jansen Grün (Green): A medium "Bottle-Green" with good intensity, darker ("greener") (bottled ink) than Herbin. This color is similar to Penman green but more yellowish but less dark.

Parker Penman Emerald Green: Does not look much of an Emerald to me; it is more like an (bottled ink and cartridge) intense medium to dark "Bottle-Green". ( Has flow problems in some pens and dries out quickly)

Private Reserve Spearmint: Pretty similar to Penman green (bottled ink)

Private Reserve Sherwood Green: Similar in color to the PR Spearmint but darker and more (bottled ink) intense, a true dark "Bottle-Green".

Turquoise Green:

Montblanc Smaragdgrün (Emerald Green): Light to medium slightly faded Emerald green (bottled ink and cartridge) with a turquoise touch.

Herbin Vert Réséda (Reseda Green): Pretty identical with the faded color of MB green.(bottled ink and cartridge)

Waltraud Bethge Papiere (WBP) Cool Colors Türkis III (Turquoise): Similar to MB green in terms of color, but more (bottled ink) and slightly darker.

Jansen Türkis (Turquoise): Darker than W.B.P. Turquoise and slightly more blue in it, it's (bottled ink) "half way" towards the Waterman green.

Waterman Green: Darkest turqoise-green I know, good color intensity with an (bottled ink and cartridge) noticeable touch of blue

Abraxas Blaugrün (Blue-Green): Turquoise green with a blue touch, similar to Waterman but (bottled ink) washed out look and not as dark

Yellow to Olive Green:

Herbin Olive: Very light yellowish olive green.(Bottled ink and cartridge)

W.B.P. Cool Colors Oliv I (Olive): Great intense light olive green with less yellow and more (Bottled ink) grass green in it than Herbin olive (about matches the color of the Omas Tokyo in lychee green).

Herbin Vert Pré (Maygreen): Light "lime-green" .(Bottled ink and cartridge)

W.B.P. Cool Colors Maigrün II (Maygreen): Intense bright "lime-green" to "grass-green".(Bottled ink)

Abraxas Maigrün (Maygreen): Similar to W.B.P. Maygreen.(Bottled ink)

Abraxas Grasgrün (Grassgreen): Darker than Abraxas Maigrün and just a touch of olive in it.(Bottled ink)

Abraxas Merkurgrün (Mercurygreen): Medium green with olive touch (Bottled ink)

Abraxas Smaragdgrün (Emeraldgreen): Similar to Mercurygreen but darker (Bottled ink)

W.B.P. Cool Colors Schilfgrün XIII (Reedgreen): A dark greyish green, looks like reed.(Bottled ink)

W.B.P. Classic Colors Schilfgrün: Identical to Cool Color Reedgreen (older label).(Bottled ink)

Jansen Dunkelgrün (Darkgreen): Dark green, kind of a "British Racing Green".
(Bottled ink)

Pelikan Moosgrün (Mossgreen): True medium to dark olive green (unfortunately
(cartridge only) discontinued).

Abraxas Olivgrün (Olivegreen): Very dark grey-black olive green

I have not tried:

Delta Green, Conway Stewart Green (which is said to be similar to Penman), Rotring and Omas Green and Omas Itali Green (Limited Production light green)

Turqoise-Blue Fountain Pen Inks:

Most turquoise blue fountain pen inks resemble the color of the Turquoise stone and come out in the cyan blue - turquoise area (a swimming pool color!).

Most turquoise blue colors look similar. I've never found a single turquoise blue to be disappointing (except that the new turquoise I bought looks exactly like the old one!) in terms of color they all have good intensity and found few being different and unique from the ordinary turquoise blue.

Some unique colors are:

Herbin Bleu Azur (Azurblue): This is more a very light blue than a turquoise and is too light for (Bottled ink and cartridge) writing, but very unique.

Montblanc Türkis (Turquoise): This is a very light and bright "swimming-pool" turquoise blue.(Bottled ink only)

Sheaffer Peacock Blue: Similar to Montblanc.(Bottled ink and cartridge)

Jansen Himmelblau (Skyblue): This color has a slight touch of yellow (leans towards turquoise) (Bottled ink)

Waterman South Sea Blue: Outstanding color, again the darkest of its kind, similar to the (Bottled ink and cartridge) Jansen color but darker and more intense

The following colors are all good examples of a decent, regular Turqoise-blue:

Lamy Türkis (Turquoise) (Bottled ink and cartridge)
Pelikan Brillant Türkis (Turquoise) (Bottled ink and cartridge)
Parker Quink Permanent Turquoise (Bottled ink and cartridge)
W.B.P. Classic Colors Lotusblau (Lotusblue) (Bottled ink) This ink feathers a lot!!!
Rotring Türkis (Turquoise)

I have not tried:

Omas Turquoise (cartridge only)
Conway Stewart Turquoise
Herbin Bleu Pervenche
Visconti Turquoise (bottled ink)
Abraxas Turqoise-Blue (bottled ink)
