This is the second issue of Stylus magazine, first introduced
September, 2003 at the NYC Pen Show. Stylus is produced by the publishing team
of International Wristwatch Magazine (IW), with experienced writers such as avid
pen collector and Managing Editor Jon Messer, also some of the Contributing Writers
such as Nancy Olson, Richard Binder, and Mel Strohminger. Mel has been writing
about Pelikan pens since Pen World Vol. 1 No.1 Fall, 1987. With many years of
publishing experience IW now brings another choice to satisfy our insatiable taste
for pen news, articles and beautiful pen photography.
Stylus is 100 pages of heavy weight glossy pages at a standard letter size
format. Fifteen major articles ranging from new to vintage pen discussions makes
for a nice balance to satisfy even a picky vintage guy like me because I always
see such a strong vintage influence on new pen issues.
According to my ratings, it is an almost even 50/50 content of 15 new and
vintage articles. This magazine should not be overlooked by die-hard vintage pen
collectors. I believe readers will eagerly receive both modern and vintage related
articles because we’re talking about our primary focus…writing instruments
and how they work.
The cover feature is the new A.T. Cross Verve pens with an interesting interview
by Nancy Olson. Half the article explains the new directions in advertising by
Cross, which is less interesting to me than my main focus. No, not the ad…I
want to see the pen because I think the style is terrific. Cross has also perfected
a new color etching process that is quite unique. The Merlot (as in wine) color
is quite like my 1948 Parker “51” in Plum. I told you, vintage and
modern, the blend continues.
Richard Binder writes The Key to Exciting Writing
Richard writes of his specialty nibs, his italics, stubs, obliques and flexible
which are now a sign of the tines. Richard explains how his specialty nibs can
produce different strokes for different folks. The article is well illustrated
and he explains in detail his trade secrets to produce his fascinating variety.
Fountain Pen Hospital - Part Two on their history by Jon Messer
No dealer has a more fascinating history in the pen business than FPH. Jon continues
with conversation with owners Terry and Steve Wiederlight and Ed Fingerman, Director
of Operations.
The Birth of American Writing Instruments, by John Loring
Great article touching on early pen makers in the United States such as Mabie
Todd and John Rauch. John Loring talks about early pencils, mechanical pencils,
quills and various writing instruments. Fascinating read and well illustrated
with writing instruments from his personal collection.
Dipping with the Best, by John Loring
John reviews a new book Colllectible Dip Pens by John Marshall.
Krone pens – by Jon Messer
Jon discusses Fashion, K-Class and Precious Metals pens and also interviews owner
Robert Kronenberger. Perhaps many people do not realize that Krone Limited Edition
pens are really an extension of his avid interest in collecting early Americana
documents. Krone pens are a continuation of this passion, and reach out to a much
wider audience. As Robert states, “Our pens not only appeal to pen collectors
but are also in some way linked to the theme that our pens so artistically represent.
Because of Krone, pen collecting is not exclusively for pen collectors anymore.”
The Regal Bearing of Cartier by Nancy Olson
Nancy presents a company profile of the famous luxury goods manufacturer and interviews
Stanislas de Quercize, CEO of Cartier North America. Nancy weaves an interesting
company profile with reviews of various Cartier writing instruments and goods.
Elmore Leonard an interview by Jordan Rothacker
Thirty-eight novels and going strong. Elmore Leonard is 78 years old
and writes his novels freehand for the last 52 years. For him this makes freehand
“real writing.”
An interview with David Oscarson, by Megan Livolsi.
Referred to as the Patek Philippe of pens, Megan discussed the Henrik Wigstrom
history and products.
Nancy Olson interviews Visconti owners Dante Del Vecchio and Luigi
Poli
Caran d’Ache an interview by Jon Messer
NYC Pen Show review by David Isaacson
Pelikan – Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow by Mel Strohminger
Mel writes a short history of Pelikan pens and their products.
Paul Erano on “The Art of Writing”
