On Snail List Biography # 185 email: einv@physics.utexas.edu

i have been teaching physics, astronomy and calculus at a community college in missouri
for two years now. prior to that i spent a decade in austin texas, studying at the UT austin physics and mathematics departments, getting two graduate degrees from there, as well as teaching physics at the austin community college.

socially, i prefer writing letters to "hanging out" with people on a real time basis, which accounts for my extensive correspondence, about 1 letter a day on average. i live with my two cats and a housemate called karen, we each just do our own thing, occasionally taking an interest in each other's lives. my cats are a russian blue called 'gajaraj', or elephant king, and a small tortoiseshell called 'kaali' named after the fearsome indian goddess.

mexico, missouri is a peaceful town although that did not keep me from having a terrible bicycle accident recently. fortunately i stand a chance of complete recovery. pentrace and especially the snails list have played a big role in my recovery and optimism; posting on the message board has taken my mind off my troubles, which it has often done. if you have not joined the snailmail list, i urge you to---not only does it foster deeper friendships but it allows you to use those pens that have been inked up!

i collect a mixture of vintage and modern pens, anything that catches my fancy; sheaffer nononsense pens are my formal collecting focus, partly because they are cheap! also because they are the most reliable pens, vintage or modern, that i have ever owned. i repair pens of all sorts, and do nib grinds for snailee friends for a nominal rate: however i am not soliciting new customers. i keep all my pens inked except those with trim next to the nib, which i either give away or sell if i possibly can before they have corroded. among vintage pens, my favorites are definitely the hard rubber eyedroppers of american manufacture, although i keep a box of plastic indian eyedroppers (uninked) as a homage to my childhood in india.

i spent the first 18 years of my life in bangalore, india, the silicon valley of my country. the next 5 years i spent at the indian institute of technology, kanpur, india, as a full-time resident student and scholar. after that i have been in the USA. i cannot forsee my future very clearly, but i know that some big changes are afoot---one thing that will likely remain constant is my love for fountain pens and letter writing.

Other interests : biking, making "stuff", model railroads, pastel art.
