David Kaplan
Biography # 199 email:

I have been collecting vintage fountain pens since 2000 with a focus on Swans, Vacs, Pelikans, P51s, Waterman Ripples, and Esties. In fact, I got started in collecting vintage fountain pens when I searched on the web for a new fountain pen. I uncovered a large number of websites devoted to vintage collecting and I got hooked. Eventually, for business reasons, I found myself in New York City and paid a call to Geoff Berliner. To his great credit, instead of selling me a pen, he sold me a book and told me to get to a show. My first show was Philly in 2000 and the rest is history. I have benefitted greatly from pen-mentors such as Geoff Berliner, David Moak, David Isaacson, Joel Hamilton, Sherrel Tyree, Rick Propas and many others. In my spare time, I am Professor of Educational Psychology at the University of Wisconsin - Madison. My research interests relate to the development and application of quantitative methods to problems in education and human development. Recently, I have become quite interested in problems of causal inference. I also have an avid interest in the analysis of baseball data and am a proud member of the Society for American Baseball Research, with membership in the Statistical Committee (of course), the 19th Century Baseball Committee, and the Deadball Era Committee. When not collecting pens, teaching, or analyzing baseball data, I follow my beloved but hapless Chicago Cubs.

Other interests : Statistical analysis of Major League Baseball data
