What a pleasure to be part of a community of such interesting and friendly people. I hope to meet many more than the few of you I've already had the pleasure of meeting in person, perhaps at an upcoming pen show. While new to collecting fountain pens as a conscious act, I've been doing so since the age of about 9, when students were taught the Palmer Method of penmanship with cork-and-wood pens and open inkwells. I can still smell that ink and feel the stains. Only riding horses with my father remains a more evocative memory of my childhood, that's how much I fell in love with pens back then. I am a graphic designer now, the owner of a computer-based studio in a lovely part of Virginia. Every day, I use the pens I collect, many of them vintage, to keep myself in touch with a paper-based world that seems to be disappearing much too fast.
Other interests
: My husband and I live on a farm, where I enjoy interacting with nature and growing many of the vegetables and herbs I cultivate to enhance some small skill people say I have at cooking. I've a passion for politics, and participate at a local level, focusing mostly on environmental issues. Afore-mentioned husband is a musician, with a deep interest in resurrecting wonderful performances of classical music from vintage 78 and LP recordings for modern listeners. You guys who enjoy tinkering with electronics and antique tubes would really enjoy sharing a few bottles of Belgian ale with him, reminiscing about your Heathkits and swapping capacitor stories, while my women friends and I hang out in the kitchen wolfing down brownies and plotting the revolution.
